Kuniko Matsutoya (Japans: 松任谷國子) (Tokio, 1938 – 26 juli 2010) was een Japans kunstschilder. In de jaren zestig was zij ook actief als radio- en televisiepersoonlijkheid.

Kuniko Matsutoya werd geboren in Tokio als dochter van Hiroko, kleindochter van Toyama Mitsuru, en dochter van Matsutoya Kentarō. Van jongs af aan had ze de wens om kleuterjuf te worden. In1959 voltooide ze haar opleiding aan Morimura Gakuen en slaagde vervolgens voor een auditie bij Fuji Television. Hier begon ze haar carrière als talentenjager in het programma Birthday Quiz. Hoewel ze later actief was als presentator, acteur en interviewer, bleef schilderkunst haar belangrijkste bezigheid. Haar werk werd in 1961 voor het eerst geselecteerd voor de prestigieuze Nikaten-tentoonstelling. In 1965 won ze een prijs in Rome en werd bekroond met een gouden medaille in Italië. Vanaf 1973 zette ze haar schilderscarrière voort in België en de Verenigde Staten, waarbij ze ook tijd doorbracht in diverse Afrikaanse landen.

In 2008 werd Matsutoya benoemd tot directeur van de schilderafdeling van Nikaten. Gedurende haar carrière organiseerde ze regelmatig ‘zustertentoonstellingen’ met haar zus, Chizuru Matsutoya, eveneens een gerenommeerd schilderes.

Naast haar werk in de kunstwereld speelde Matsutoya een belangrijke rol in het bekendmaken van het verhaal Een Hond van Vlaanderen in België. Dit verhaal, dat bijzonder populair is in Japan, bracht ze samen met haar vriend Albert Van Oppens naar Antwerpen. In deze periode woonde het paar eerst samen in Tokio. Matsutoya verscheen ook op de Japanse televisie, samen met Albert Van Oppens en zijn kinderen Serge, Nicole, Guy, Eddy en Berta.

Sinds 1985 siert een standbeeld in Hoboken waarop Nello en Patrasche op levendige wijze worden afgebeeld. Daarnaast werd op de Handschoenmarkt in Antwerpen op 10 december 2016 een kunstwerk onthuld, waarin de twee vrienden slapend worden weergegeven.

Kuniko Matsutoya’s schreef in 1976 het boek België: Een Heerlijk Verblijf, uitgegeven door Shinshokan. Dit werk biedt een unieke en poëtische blik op België, zijn landschappen en cultuur. In dit werk verweeft Matsutoya haar observaties met persoonlijke herinneringen, waarbij ze de kleuren, geuren en stemmingen van het land tot leven brengt. Met passages die variëren van feestelijke vieringen tot intieme reflecties, vangt ze een tijdsgeest die zowel nostalgisch als tijdloos is. Biography:

Kuniko Matsutoya was born in Tokyo as the daughter of Hiroko, the granddaughter of Toyama Mitsuru, and the daughter of Matsutoya Kentarō. From a young age, she aspired to become a kindergarten teacher.

In 1959, she completed her education at Morimura Gakuen and subsequently passed an audition at Fuji Television, where she began her career as a talent scout for the program Birthday Quiz. Although she later worked as a presenter, actor, and interviewer, painting remained her primary passion.

In 2008, Matsutoya was appointed director of the painting department at Nikaten. Throughout her career, she frequently organized “sister exhibitions” alongside her sister, Chizuru Matsutoya, who was also a renowned painter.

Aside from her artistic work, Matsutoya played a significant role in introducing the story A Dog of Flanders to Belgium. This story, which is particularly popular in Japan, was brought to Antwerp by her and her friend, Albert Van Oppens. During this period, the couple first lived together in Tokyo. Matsutoya also appeared on Japanese television alongside Van Oppens and his children.

Since 1985, a statue in Hoboken has depicted Nello and Patrasche in vivid detail. Additionally, on December 10, 2016, a sculpture was unveiled in Antwerp’s Handschoenmarkt, showing the two friends sleeping together.

Kuniko Matsutoya wrote the book Belgium: A Delightful Stay in 1976, published by Shinshokan. This work offers a unique and poetic perspective on Belgium, its landscapes, and its culture. In this book, Matsutoya intertwines her observations with personal memories, bringing to life the colors, scents, and moods of the country. With passages ranging from festive celebrations to intimate reflections, she captures a spirit of the times that is both nostalgic and timeless. The book, published by Shinshokan, serves as a special cultural bridge between Japan and Europe.
